I purchased this dress from a thrift shop when I was in high school, somewhere between 1992-1994, and I wore it pretty regularly for about ten years. Whoever made this thing deserves some kind of award, because it’s in perfect condition after at least 50 years. It’s either from the 1960s or early 70s. Even though this is technically a shift dress, nobody’s going to mistake you for a square. I’ve always imagined the person who made it to be a no-nonsense type who wanted something comfortable and a little more traditional than she usually wore. Those little peeks of black in the pattern point to that.
“I wore this dress to one of six or seven interviews Playboy magazine put me through before they finally hired me. Somebody asked where I got my dress, and saying it was a handmade piece I found at a thrift store in high school impressed them.”
